Tankless vs. Tank Water Heaters: An Honest Comparison

Real installed costs, lifespans, and energy savings — and the situations where a tankless water heater is the wrong choice.

Tankless water heaters get sold hard. Sometimes they're the right call; sometimes a conventional tank is the smarter money. Here's the honest version, from a company that installs and services both.

The numbers

Industry cost guides for 2026 put a conventional tank replacement at roughly $1,200–$3,500 installed, and a gas tankless at roughly $2,500–$5,500 installed — more if your home needs a gas line or venting upgrade to feed it, which many older homes do (figure another $500–$2,000 when that applies). Lifespans differ meaningfully: tanks average 8–12 years, tankless units 15–20 with proper maintenance. Tankless units also eliminate standby heat loss — the energy a tank spends keeping 40–50 gallons hot around the clock — which is where their operating savings come from.

Where tankless shines

Endless hot water for a busy household, a garage wall freed up, longer service life, and lower monthly operating cost. Over a 15–20 year span the total cost of ownership usually favors tankless — if the installation didn't require major gas or venting work, and if you keep up with maintenance.

Where the tank wins

Three situations, honestly: First, if your gas line or venting needs a significant upgrade, the payback math gets long. Second, hard water — which we have across the Inland Empire — scales up tankless heat exchangers; they need periodic descaling (an easy service, but a real one), and a neglected unit loses both efficiency and lifespan. Third, if your usage is modest, the standby losses you'd eliminate are small, and a quality tank at half the installed price is simply the better buy.

A middle path people forget

A well-insulated modern tank with insulated hot-water lines is dramatically more efficient than the 15-year-old unit it replaces. Sometimes the right answer is just a better tank.
